What Counts as a Heavy Truck: Class 7 and Class 8

The FHWA classifies trucks by gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). Heavy trucks start at Class 7.

ClassGVWRTrucks we see most
Class 726,001 to 33,000 lbsClass 7 builds of the Ford F-750, Freightliner M2 106, International MV, and Hino L-Series. Box trucks, reefers, and wreckers.
Class 8Over 33,000 lbsFreightliner Cascadia, Kenworth T680 and W900, Peterbilt 579 and 389, Volvo VNL, International LT, Mack Anthem. Vocational trucks like the Mack Granite, Kenworth T880, and Peterbilt 567.

A loaded Class 8 combination can gross 80,000 lbs, the federal interstate limit. That weight is why heavy trucks need heavy-duty tools, parts, and lifts. Running a pickup or a lighter medium-duty truck? Our diesel truck repair page covers every class we service.

Semi Truck Repair by How Your Truck Works

The same Cascadia fails differently in linehaul than it does in local dock work. We look at how your truck runs before we look at the fault code.

Over-the-Road Sleeper Tractors

Regional and Day Cab Tractors

Short runs, constant stops, and dock time wear out brakes, starters, batteries, and air systems faster than highway miles do. Low exhaust temperatures during stop-and-go work also make it harder for the DPF to regenerate on its own. We run parked and forced regens and fix the sensor or dosing fault behind the derate.

Vocational Class 8 Trucks

Dump trucks, concrete mixers, and refuse trucks work off-road, carry heavy loads, and run PTO-driven equipment. They take a beating on suspension, frames, and air systems. We come to the job site for on-site repairs. Cracked frames and structural damage go to our Mansfield shop for welding and fabrication.

Class 7 Straight Trucks

Box trucks, reefers, and wreckers in the 26,001 to 33,000 lb range often run Cummins B6.7 or L9 engines and Allison automatics. Common calls include DEF faults, no-starts, cooling leaks, and brake work on delivery routes.
